What Is Bevel Board?

At Brandt Photography we feel that the beveled edge mount board is the ultimate portrait presentation. Our previous supplier was erratic and slow to deliver. Many times the boards were not square. Once we discovered Consolidated Photo Packaging was manufacturing beveled boards, we were ecstatic. The service is immediate and the boards are thicker, they have a nicer surface, the gold edge doesn't flake off during mounting, and they are always square!
We were afraid we would have to change our signature presentation but Consolidated Photo Packaging saved us.
Some studios would like to take advantage of this rich presentation but don't understand how to mount on the beveled boards. Prints to be mounted must be cut accurately to the dimensions of the top surface of the boards. The secret is to use a roller trimmer. First, tack dry-mount tissue to the back of the print, then use the roller trimmer to cut the print and the tissue together. By measuring the top dimensions of the different sized boards, you can mark the scale on the roller trimmer with tape and then simply cut to the tape marks. Because Consolidated Photo Packaging is so consistent, you can rely on these cuts. If one does vary a little, the roller trimmer allows you to trim small slivers at a time until the fit is perfect. Then just stick it in the mount press.
Not only are beveled boards beautiful, they can be used as part of the finished framing. By gluing mounted prints to a background of fabric or matte board, you create a new piece. Now frame the background leaving the gold beveled edge of the print looking like a filet frame. It's like under-matting instead of over-matting and if you lacquer the prints, you don't need glass. It is a very elegant presentation that helps us sell multiple print series.
Our favorite is two vertical prints on each side with one horizontal print in the middle. By trimming the horizontal print in the middle to the same height as the two vertical prints on the sides, you can achieve a uniform height. The great thing about Consolidate Photo Packaging is they will make custom size beveled boards like a 7 x 10, 10 x 14, or 14 x 20 which allows you to frame them with the 5 x 7, 8 x 10, or 11 x 14 vertical prints to maintain a uniform height.
Consolidated Photo Packaging makes the edges in several colors: Gold Metallic, Silver Metallic, and Black Lacquer. Black and white photos look spectacular in black or silver edges. You can also spray paint the edges any color prior to mounting the print for a truly customized look.
"How To" Instructions
ParaMount Gold Bevel Board can be used with tissue adhesive, spray adhesives and pressure sensitive sheet adhesives. The gold paint on the beveled edge will not flake off and is overlapped onto the mounting area to ease print alignment.
- If you are using heat activated mounting tissue or pressure sensitive sheet adhesive affix the mounting medium to the print. If you are using spray adhesive go to Step 2.
- Trim photographic print to fit inside the beveled area of the mount board. Gold Bevel Board is offered in standard photographic sizes (outside dimensions) with a slightly smaller mounting area created by the 40º bevel. A standard photographic print must be trimmed by approximately 1/8" on all four sides.
- Affix the print to the gold bevel board following the manufacturers instruction for use.
Bevel And Paint
ParaMount Gold Bevel Board is five (5) plies thick (129 pt.) and beveled at a 40º bevel to increase the amount of the gold edge that will show and enhance the appearance of your presentation. The bevel and a small overlap on the face of the mount board are sprayed with an non-flaking automotive type metallic paint.
